Exploration, science, and technology had extended mankind's knowledge and mastery of his environment. A spirit of freedom had grown, public education and literacy were on the rise, standards of nutrition, sanitation and health were advanced, and religious tolerance was accepted. The power of steam and electricity had been harnessed to light cities and to perform many tasks. Industry and commerce had brought a degree of prosperity beyond anything previously known. One of the most significant developments of the century just past was the vigorous growth of the newspaper and magazine press in many countries, and potentially in all.

An apparatus to project the films in Page 16 enlarged size on a white surface or screen was devised not only by Edison, but by Thomas Arnat of Washington, and another by Louis Lumiere of Paris. Novelty films were being shown from 1894. The camera also was used to film events in Europe and elsewhere. Motion pictures were made in 1897 of President William McKinley's first inaugural in Washington. C. Hemment, was in Cuba in 1898 during the Spanish-American War as a member of the New York Journal group of correspondents dispatched by its publisher, William Randolph Hearst.

He is said to have interviewed Japanese leaders, visited troops and military installations, even to have taken photographs, and then returned to the United States to write. If true, he may have been an espionage agent. Page 24 experienced correspondent for the Times, arrived in New York with authorization to purchase equipment from the American Wireless Telegraph Company, formed in 1902 by Dr. Lee DeForest, one of several pioneers in the advancement of wireless telegraphy. James had the equipment transported to San Francisco for shipment to Hong Kong.
