Part of the problem was the lower quality of the ore that had recently been coming out of the Great Bear Lake mine. Improvements to the refining process would boost yields somewhat, but they would be expensive, and the cost was not justifiable while radium prices were in a nosedive. In the background, of course, loomed the radium inventory. When current and expected sales and rentals were deducted, Eldorado would still have about eighty-eight grams of radium to fall back on. From his observations of the international scene, Bennett anticipated that political sales that cleared dozens of grams of radium from the inventory were a thing of the past.
