For different social groups and different individuals are placed in very distinct ways in relation to those flows and interconnections. The point concerns not merely the issue of who moves and who doesn’t, although that is one element of it; it is also about power in relation to the flows and the movement. Distinct social groups have distinct relationships to this anyway-differentiated mobility; some are more in charge than others; some initiate flows and movement, others don’t; some are more on the receiving end of it than others; some are effectively imprisoned by it.

Locating Difference “Politics of location”—a term first coined by Adrienne Rich in the early 1980s—is labeled by some “as a particularly North American feminist articulation of difference” that insists on interrogating and deconstructing the position, identity, and privilege of whiteness (Kaplan 1994, 139). S. women’s movement and in academic feminist discourses. The painful splits created by these struggles forced the white feminist mainstream to turn its attention away from assertions of similarity and homogeneity to examinations of difference—“an uneven, divisive, and slow process of shifts” that remains incomplete in both theoretical and political terms (Kaplan 1994, 140).
