During the sea level fall from 1929 up to the end of the 1950s, on the average, the seaward edge of the delta of the Volga River had advanced by about 10–20 km.

Among these types of previous studies, the monographs [1–3] and atlases [4, 5], which helped to form the general picture of the physical and oceanographic conditions of the Caspian Sea are notable. This study is distinguished for the greater amount of the observational data used and for the more up-to-date techniques of their processing and analysis, close to those used in the widely known Climatological Atlas of the World Ocean [6]. This provides the possibility of significant refinement and improvement of existing concepts of the physical oceanography of the Caspian Sea waters.
