The increasingly young population is significantly impacting the industry. As of 2012 there were 90 million people less than 25 years old. People in this age group are more interested in modern retail forms like supermarkets, hypermarkets, minimarts and convenience stores, although traditional wet markets are not only prevalent but deemed part of society. After Vietnam opened its door to foreignowned retail business in 2009, local retail companies expanded to build a more vibrant distribution network.
Malaysia attracts international students from many countries, but primarily from China, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria and Bangladesh. However, the government has concerns about the alignment of education with human capital development. It plans to develop education as an export industry, upskilling the workforce and developing Malaysia as an education hub in Asia. The government recognises the country needs a critical mass of researchers to be globally competitive. In 2008 it launched the ‘MyBrain15’ initiative with the objective of producing 60,000 Malaysian PhD graduates by 2020.
However, shortages of skilled medical professionals, many of whom left the profession to join non-medical fields as a result of unattractive pay packages and poor infrastructure, are one of the key challenges facing the industry (Sanjeed, 2009; World Bank, 2013c).
