Given the poor track record of development since the 1950s, some fresh thinking is definitely in order. Yet, as Alan Thomas has pointed out, throwing out the term and abandoning the project will not alleviate the very real problems of ‘poverty and powerlessness, environmental degradation and social disorder’ (Thomas 2000a: 21) that continue to affect billions of people across the world.
