One hindrance to an individual’s movement is the fear of being exposed to an uncontrolled or unexpected danger, such as being a crime victim. This part of the book considers the moving journey and examines safety from both the offender’s and the potential victim’s perspective.

Smith and Clarke (2000) identify six crime categories which are typically present in transit settings, and these are crimes against passengers such as theft, robbery and assault; crimes against employees; vandalism and graffiti; antisocial behaviour; and line of route crimes. The latter of these are not crimes during journeys, but more so offences such as metal theft of track, which causes service interruptions. In addition, Newton (2004) suggests that it is useful to distinguish ‘en route’ offences from those at transport nodes.
