Their design recommendations were often simple and ‘hands-on’, such as the pragmatic placing of road junctions and designing to follow contours along with methods of lightening the burden of domestic chores and sanitation. With regards to housing, their work investigated various solutions but concluded that the ‘traditional’ compound arrangement, if built soundly with adequate crossventilation, was the most appropriate type, and that the best people to design the housing were the people living in the villages themselves.
